Inspiration Is the Gateway to Trust

The best way to build trust?

Get obsessed with what you love.

When you care deeply about your craft, learning becomes addictive – and before long, people can feel that depth. You become the go-to person. The reliable one. The “I’ll ask Vinnie” person in the room.

That’s what builds trust – expertise born from genuine curiosity.

Data as your co-pilot

If you ever saw the number of tabs I keep open, you’d probably stage an intervention. My laptop fan sounds like it’s training for a triathlon.

But every one of those tabs is a trail of breadcrumbs – ideas, data points, and case studies waiting to connect the dots.

And more often than not, one of those dots ends up turning into a moment of magic on a client call. Someone says something, I remember a stat I saw earlier, and suddenly we’re deepening the conversation in real-time.

When you can support your perspective with something credible – a study, a quote, a data point – you’re not just agreeing. You’re giving the discussion new depth. You’re opening doors to more ideas.

And when you disagree (respectfully) with evidence in hand, it’s even more powerful. You’re showing that you think critically, value truth, and welcome dialogue. That’s trust in action.

Because whether your data point reinforces or challenges someone’s opinion, you’re building credibility, not tension. You’re showing respect through evidence.

A growth mindset creates momentum

Very early on, I decided I wanted to live with a growth mindset. Not in the cliché “read 10 books a month” sense – but in the “never stop being curious” sense.

The day you stop learning is the day you start plateauing.

At 20, I was obsessed with advertising. So when I landed my first job in the industry, I bought a subscription to Campaign magazine. Every fortnight, I’d read it cover to cover – career moves, creative campaigns, thought leadership from marketing’s biggest names.

Every morning on the London Underground, that was my ritual: headphones in, Campaign on my lap, eyes scanning every word. I was studying the industry like it was a map to where I wanted to go.

The part that always got me? The career journeys. Someone who started in the mailroom, now an Executive Creative Director at a global agency. It made me ask – what’s my version of that story?

That habit of constant curiosity still shapes me today. It’s why I started co-hosting the APAC Growth Podcast – a gig that started because the original host enjoyed one of our conversations and asked me to join. It’s become a direct line to brilliant thinkers, leaders, and doers across the region.

Whether it’s a podcast chat, a client meeting, or a boardroom discussion – every interaction is a chance to collect insights, process them, and share them back in a way that’s relevant. That’s how trust scales.

Know when not to sell

Let’s talk about the 95:5 Rule from John Dawes (Ehrenberg-Bass) and Jon Lombardo (B2B Institute). It’s simple: in any given moment, only 5% of your potential buyers are ready to buy. The other 95% aren’t there yet.

So, what do you do with the 95%? You earn their trust until they are.

That lesson hit home for me way before I knew what the 95:5 rule was – back when I was 17, selling mobile phones in a retail store.

A customer came in looking for a specific model we didn’t have. Instead of pushing something else, I picked up the phone to a competitor down the road and asked them to hold the exact model for him. My colleagues thought I was mad.

But my manager backed me.

That moment defined how I’ve approached sales and business ever since. I don’t want to sell people something they’ll regret. I want to solve real problems for people who actually need the solution.

That’s what real trust looks like.

The takeaway

When you lead with curiosity, evidence, and honesty – you don’t just build trust; you become magnetic. People feel safe around your expertise.

That’s why MySocial.ai exists – to help you scale that authenticity online.

Because trust doesn’t start with a sale. It starts with being inspired.
